VALOUR
“VAL” “O” Ownership is also a key factor to
higher firm performance. To
be truly productive, employees need to feel that they are part of, and
have a sense of ownership in, the organization. “R” The “R” in valor represents
informal and formal rewards. “When employees share the experience of
being part of something bigger than any individual could accomplish and
winning, performance tends to increase,” states Dr. Welbourne. “Sharing with employees,
creating an environment where people want to come to work every day, and
providing flexibility to people who have great demands on their time are
the types of rewards that help create a high success culture.” Don’t Forget The “U” The traits encompassing v-a-l-o-r
provide a great roadmap to better firm performance, but it’s not
complete. Successful
company growth involves a combination of sense of urgency and all of the
components of valor. When employees relax, begin to feel
comfortable and fail to put forth any extra effort, firm performance can
suffer. For example, sense
of urgency is often very high in a start-up organization. However, once the company reaches a level of financial
success, there is no longer a survival-mode atmosphere, the sense of
urgency decreases, and performance levels tend to go down. Companies need to balance a sense of
urgency with the valor traits in order to thrive. To remember this, use the traditional English spelling of
“VALOUR” where the “u” stands for this sense of urgency. A Final Note “Balance in sense of urgency and the components of valor results in employees engaging in ‘above and beyond’ behaviors,” states Dr. Welbourne. “These non-job behaviors are acts of heroism at work and are the things that result in major innovations, changes in technology, loyalty among workers, employees encouraging each other, and as a result, long-term competitive advantage.”

Is there a balance of V-A-L-O-U-R at your
organization? The Valour Pulse™ provides real-time information about critical issues affecting employee performance. In this weekly survey that takes less than two minutes to complete, we ask employees about their pulse and the pulse of the organization. The Valour Pulse is predictive of performance, turnover, and job satisfaction at the individual level, and diagnostic at the department level. On a real-time basis, it shows how top performers and key personnel react to interventions such as salary changes, promotions, layoffs, mergers and acquisitions, and more. The Valour Pulse provides open, but confidential, communication from employees without the possibility of reprisal. This helps to reveal critical issues (such as product or service problems, potential race or sexual discrimination, management actions that motivate or upset key performers, etc.). Managers receive the information they need before it’s too late. The Valour Pulse provides the information, communication vehicle and coaching needed to help build and sustain an organization’s strength during change. For additional information, please
